Data Loss Issue in Money for iOS

It took a short bout of panic but we finally discovered that, due to a glitch, bad moon, or some other unpredictable setback, the App Store builds of Money for iPhone and iPad contain a bug that prevents them from detecting files on iCloud. The data is not gone but cannot be accessed from iOS devices. So we rebuilt the same code, and now it works like a charm. I’m a writer myself and have no idea what all this means but the IT guys tell me that, in a nutshell, there was a problem that wasn’t their fault, and now it’s gone.

We’ve already submitted the iPhone and iPad updates for Apple’s approval and got an emergency ticket to get the approval real fast. Hopefully, you’ll be able to access your iCloud files within a couple of days.

        Dropbox sync: Write a file. Read a file. It’s not that hard, it’s how Dropbox is built. It can’t be harder than the unusable WiFi synching.

          It’s not that easy. It’s not like our file is a simple text file, it’s actually a database, this is why the traditional approach wouldn’t work.

            Yet, it does work! I use it to sync my Money files between my desktop and my laptop. It’s looking like all of the problems with your software are our fault, or Apple’s fault, but certainly not yours.

Thank you for finally bringing back WiFi sync!!! It worked for me thankfully for my previous back up : )

Now a question: whenever I open Money on my Desktop Mac, instead of opening my only money file, it keeps on opening a new blank document for me to start…What should I do to correct this?

Why is the new version if the Mac os simply launch the application, it opens that is Sample File New Document and proposes to create a new account? In previous versions, it open the last time file, and now I have to run the file with the base, which is in my personal folders far away.

    Make sure you do not have this setting enabled(OS X 10.8.2): “System Preferences > General > Close windows when quitting an application”
    For OS X 10.7.5 you need to check if you have enabled: “System Preferences > General > Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps”

      This stinks. I do not want most of my app’s opening all the files that were open last time they ran.

      I move between networks and shared folders a lot – I just get loads of file not found errors if I untick that box :(

        It’s not their fault! Except previous versions worked better. Every release gets worse, but it’s not their fault because they can’t override system preferences. Except they can with local preferences.

        So to make their app work you have to make every other app behave badly.

        I really hate that I bought your product for every platform, and it’s now being broken for every platform.

Will the wi-fi sync this time allow syncing between an iPhone and iPad without the desktop client? If not, I may have to find a new app (and after a month or so of this app being almost completely non-functional, I’ve definitely been looking).

    Unfortunately, Wi-Fi sync requires Money for Mac if you want to sync data between iOS devices.

      Which makes the program completely cumbersome and borderline useless for me. I don’t have a Mac. I don’t carry my iPad everywhere with me, so it’s not convenient to enter purchases on it as I make them. But I really liked the iPad client’s interface, as it was much easier to do all my budgeting on it than on my iPhone. Jumsoft Money still has a better interface and clearer organization than the other financial apps I’ve been trying, but until they can figure out how to sync between phone and pad without having a Mac intermediary, it’s just a waste of memory.

        I totally agree!!! I have the same problem. No mac version (no way I’m going to spend $40 for an app with all these problems). I want to sync m iPad and iPhone like I used to do with iCloud. I haven’t update my money apps, but somehow now the iPad version keeps crashing every time I open it. I think I’m just going to look for another app with no problem. Jumsoft just sucks right now!!!!

I liked iCloud sync and would vote to keep this feature at least as optional. I am using different iOS devices as well as OSX and not often have an opportunity to bring them all together into one “open”(not firewalled) WiFi network. Disabling iCloud sync will make Money unusable for me, :(

    Same here.
    I beta tested iCloud sync which took a very long time for time and a lot of reporting for me.
    I spent -many- hours to let it work properly because the WiFi sync is not an option for me.
    Come on, in 2013 it’s silly to came back home to sync my iPhone and my iPad together.

    So here they are. Chopped the feature without any advice and temporary lost all my data.
    Can’t imagine anything worse for Money.

    I’d like to second this. It was the iCloud wifi syncing that made me select this product over the others that I reviewed and to loose this feature makes the Mac App, and the iPhone and iPad apps that I’ve bought almost useless to me.

    Can I get a refund if you are not going to re-implement this feature in a short term time span?

Fingers crossed may have found a way past the blank screen/file gremlin…

Same as above I was getting empty file every time I opened, even tho I could then access backup file using ‘open recent’. Sync also just came up with empty file on my phone.
Discovered however that if I opened Money (and therefore the aggravating blank file), then opened my backup, then killed (cancel, don’t save) the untitled new file and then ‘Quit Money’ using toolbar WITHOUT clicking the red dot exit button at top left of the file first, when I reopened, lo and behold my data file opened.

AND it synched successfully..hallelujah!

Have repeated this a few times. Exiting the file before quitting always results in Money opening with blank file. Repeat process above and it works again.

After two months without data on the iPhone I was using daily, i’m not sure whether to laugh or cry:-)

Hope it works for anyone out there having the same problem.

PS. I don’t have a problem with offering iCloud sync but fail to see why can’t have wifi as option as well. YNAB does. Also want guarantee it would work if using two different iCloud ids, ie my husband and I were both wifi syncing to one mac to manage household accounts. Would this work if he has sep iCloud ID?

It’s a great app, when it WORKS!

So, despite the shame of iCloud not working, both iOS and Mac apps appear to be working perfectly, which is always a treat. One thing that is featured but not utilised is Taxes. Please can you implement a report that will show how much tax has been paid/received over a period?? It would appear to be a much more basic implementation than iCloud, yet much more useful. Then we can see if we owe the tax man or if he owes us, without getting the calculator out. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the effort! OF course, I am one of the user experiencing iCloud sync problem. If possible, I really want to see the enhanced iCloud sync back, or even other cloud services sync.

After trying different financial apps on iOS, I still find Money is the best. I wish you are not discouraged by the first unsuccessful attempt of incorporating the iCloud sync, I think you will finally solve it as you have invented such a good financial app for us.

This is unreal. I held off on installing the latest update just to make sure there were no last minute bugs or issues to warrant a sudden recall of the update. Now that I have updated Money on my iMac, I have to deal with this annoying prompt to create a new account each time I open the application. I have an existing Money file and I want it to default to that when I open the application, just like it did before I updated. I do NOT want to modify my system preferences to reopen previous windows when I reopen the app because that will affect all of my other programs. This is not acceptable. I paid for three versions of this software (Mac, iPhone and iPad) and I’m starting to regret it. I’m almost wondering if I would be better off using a spreadsheet instead!

Please fix this!

After this update, I cannot retrieve the file from iCloud. I have tried reinstalling and restarting the Mac and iPhone but nothing works. The “download from iCloud button” is missing from the Mac App (which is the first app that was updated to the latest version) and the iPhone app just doesn’t do anything but open a blank file. I know the file is still in iCloud because I checked from the iCloud preference on my iMac. But because of this update, I lost years of transactions with it wandering aimlessly in the Cloud. If anyone knows how I can retrieve the file from iCloud, whether it be an external app or any other method, please help. Thanks.

I’m posting this here as Jumsoft didn’t reply to a support email I sent in early January. I’ve sent a support email again but I don’t expect much help.

After having used Money successfully on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook for the last three weeks I decided to sync everything one last time before updating the apps to remove iCloud. Result: all data trashed.

I will not be using these apps again and I am furious that I have lost this data,

    We are sorry to hear that, this is why we had to remove iCloud support.
    As for your data, Money for Mac makes automatic backups every 24 hours, so please give them a shot. You can find them by using: “File > Restore from Backup” menu.

I have just upgraded Money on my imac and now when i open the app it cannot find my documents – when i try to open the documents i get ‘iCloud files cannot be opened with this version.’ – how can i recover my data from t he cloud.

Hi, all of a sudden my iPad doesn’t allow me to sync it with Mac. In the afternoon it worked well but now even when I am on the same wifi, I don’t see my iPad in Money on my Mac… I am getting really upset with this app. I paid for all three versions but it seems to have problems all the time…

I got notified today of an update for the Mac version, so I applied it. Up until now, I had my data on the iCloud. Now when I open Money, it opens a blank data base. I have tried putting a copy of the .money file in various folders, but still keep opening the blank data base. The only way I can rescue my data is to go to Open Recent and work through the list until I get the one I know is right. So….

- what file is my data being held in?
- when I hit Save (or Close Money), where will it be saved?
- when I back the file up, where will that backup be

I have testet Money with the Trial and with the iPhone App! I love thus Softwar, but a lot of Bugs in it! Money looks very good, reports are nice, Categories and Payees management are perfect, but a lot of function dose’t work with the keyboard, only with the Mouse!
I can’t believe, that Jumsoft not bring Money with Dropbox sync, it’s easy and Dropbox is free for all!

Now, I work with Moneydance, sync with Dropbox works wonderful, with my Mac Book, iMac and iPhone. The Support from Moneydance are PERFECT and live!

Wha can’t Money this? I don’t understand!!

Instead of using the old-age Wifi sync or the unstable iCloud that is still in infancy, I actually have thought of a great way to solve many of these problems: Implement the “accounts” feature that allows all users to create their unique account, in which all of their data will be stored in that account and synced to every device that runs the money app.

Why do I suggest this? Because many successful, best-selling cloud-enabled apps have such feature. Look at apps like ‘Things’, ‘Wunderlist’ etc. These developers have implemented the accounts feature and once user is logged on to their account on all their devices, the data syncs harmoniously and silently. Wifi-sync is old-schooled, as you have to do that manually, and connect to the same wifi network. iCloud is just too slow. When I launch Things or Wunderlist, all of my latest data is downloaded to the app, as long as I’m connected to the internet via ANY means.

Trust me, if you want to build the best cloud experience for users, THIS IS IT! The cloud function works the best when users don’t realize the existence of that feature anymore. IT JUST WORKS!

So, after all this rant, I really hope that you guys consider your product development approach and create this feature. Moreover, money database isn’t large at all, I have been using the app for more than 2 years and the entire database is less than 2MB.

I’d also like to hear what Jumsoft thinks, as well as how other users think of it :)

    Isn’t it amazing how a company makes their paying customers wait over a year or more for the most requested feature (cloud sync), get it all messed up, pull it back and yet, we stupid customers entrust our precious, highly sensitive financial data to this product.
    It is said that you get what you pay for. But after having paid for three different versions of the App, not even one works well enough.
    If Jumsoft hasn’t been listening to their customers screaming themselves hoarse on what is one of their most commented on products in their portfolio, I don’t think anything is likely to change.
    I for one, am going to start looking elsewhere. Any recommendations?

    Apple gives out refunds quite easily. Took me one email to refund all three Money apps after I explained the situation to them. I would encourage everyone disappointed with jumsoft’s move to do the same, maybe once enough people get their refunds we’ll see them implement a working and convenient sync solution.

      @Jimmy: how long has there been between your purchase and your request for a refund at apple? I’ve bought my 3 versions of money quite some time ago and am now left with the whole “it’s not our fault that our product isn’t working” situation…

      @ryan: I switched to iBank and am quite happy with it… no cloud-sync though (wifi only), however, after having tought about this whole mess and putting my financial data in the cloud, I’m quite happy with wifi only (the sync works rock solid, i can make entries on my mac and on my phone the whole day and sync it in the evening, no problem…

        It’s been 28 days for the Mac version and a bit over a month for ipad and iphone versions. Even if Apple denies a refund because you bought a while ago chargeback through your bank/credit card company should still be an option, no?

I paid this year for the Appstore version, only because it had iCloud sync. Not only my files got corrupt (iOS versions differ from iCloud), but I am fed up with fixing these files.

Since getting a refund from Apple is almost impossible, can I still get a refund from you, Jumsoft people? I think it would be fair, as it’s not a $0.99 app…

    You won’t get a refund. I asked for one last year about 3 days after I purchased the iPad and iPhone apps, only to find out I needed the Mac version to sync.

    Guess what? I didn’t even get so much as a reply.

    Like I said, cut your losses and move on. This is a company that won’t even reply to paying customers. The owners think they deserve your money. They don’t.

I have started last Year with Money Trial on Mac and with the iPhone App. The Money Datafile I moved in a Folder under Documents and for Backup under a second Folder, all without Problems. Now, with the new Version 4.4.2 I have no Problem, all is perfekt. When I am starting Money on Mac, Money open the File from the Folder under Documents and if I start Money on iPhone, I can start my Datafile without Problems. Sync with WiFi is ok, but not the last Solution, Sync with Dropbox is perfect, like Moneydance or YNAB. Sync with iCloud is nothing, you can work with ONLY ONE Cloud ID from Apple, with Dropbox all can work with one Dropbox Account! I love Money from Jumsoft, a great and Beautiful Interface, Reports are great, management of Payees and categories are WONDERFUL, please JUMSOFT, bring Sync with Dropbox and install a Forum for your Customers on your Website, your Communication with your Customers are very bad, not like the Software! Develop and sell a good software is one thing, but a good service to offer a different matter. marketing also needs to be learned, but also service!

Before updating Money, I recommend this: in the (old version’s) iCloud opening file dialog drag the file to the desktop or somewhere else local. Because when I updated, and Money tried to migrate my iCloud file, it crashed and just saved a blank file. File>Download from iCloud hasn’t been able as an option from then on in the file menu. So I was very happy to have my file local.

WiFi-syncing isn’t the most convenient way, but I prefer it to iCloud-documents and data (which causes problems also with other apps, like iWork etc.). The best thing would be a syncing server solution like the OmniGroup has for OmniFocus. That’s very practical and never fails…

As for the blank file at launch – yes, not good. My workaround is to keep my Money file on the desktop and start it by double-clicking…

Sync with Dropbox it is so easy… like Moneywell, Moneydance, YNAB!

I can’t believe that? Most programs, the sync to iCloud, do not work, but programs that sync with Dropbox functions very well! I would now like to buy money for mac from appstore, but now I want to know what happens in the future, please give us, your customers, more information!

While I agree that it would be great to have the ability to sync my 3 Money apps via iCloud, at this point I would be happy with simply being able to sync accurately with Wi-Fi. Ever since the most recent update that eliminated iCloud and reverted back to Wi-Fi, my syncs have been plagued with conflicts between devices that have caused me to reconcile all of my accounts almost daily for the last week.

Categories (and sub-categories) that I’ve either edited or created on each device do not sync properly, and categories that I’ve deleted re-appear on all devices over and over again after each sync.

I’m at the point where I’ve stopped using the iPhone & iPad apps, and am strictly relying on the Mac app.

It’s annoying and frustrating.

    Got the same problem. Until they figure out how to solve this mess, i found a way that could work to sync without problems for deleting categories and accounts:
    First, rename your file to Money.money, it will help later. When you’re finished working with your mac file, make sure you make a back up of your work (it shows the time you did it) and then try to sync to your devices. If you’re having problems, just delete de file on your devices and create new ones (money.money by default). Restore from your backup in your mac and just fill the new ones in your devices with the information you recovered from the backup. It’s working for me right know, although there are lot of steps to do!

If someone like me is happy about the iCloud version but by mistake has updated the app to its new version that eliminates the iCloud feature (2.5.2), it can be downgraded again to the 2.5 version by getting the .ipa file in the trash bin of your Mac and reinstall it over in iTunes. This happens when you updated the apps in iTunes, it installs the new version and put the old one in the trash bin. If the trash bin has been emptied out, then there is no way to downgrade. Hope that helps someone in this confusing time of Jumsoft Money app.

I loved this app but then they upgraded and I lost almost 1 years checkbook register information. Worked with them for hours and never could get it back. They blamed Apple. I decided to give them another chance so I reentered my info… the app went down and I lost everything I just reentered. At this point I put in a request for a full refund from Apple Support Itunes.

Jumsoft, I just lost a good 3 days of my life. Your product is shit. How can you put an update out that refuses to open iCloud files from previous versions? How can I trust that this won’t happen when I have, say 30 days of my life into this product? Do you know how lame “its not our fault because Apple… blah blah blah” sounds to me right now? Everyone’s got an excuse these days. How about, “We here at Jumsoft completely effed up and we sincerely apologize. We will work day and night to ensure this never happens again.” I’m writing Apple to get my money back. Good day.
