It’s Official: Money for iPhone is out
Again, we’ve made you wait a bit too long. All the technicalities are things you don’t want to know about. Even our best efforts to make our first product for iPhone as cool as possible are not that important. What matters is that Jumsoft Money 1.0 for iPhone is finally ready, it’s waiting for you on iTunes App Store, and it’s sensational!
Tears of pride are running down our cheeks as you’re reading this. We wanted the application to be good, and darn, is it good. And free. You can take it or leave it, but we kind of suggest you take it, just in case you never ever get an opportunity like this again.
So that’s what comes with the package (in case you are not familiar with the desktop version of Money). Money for iPhone allows you to create different types of accounts for your cash, bank accounts, credit cards, and investments and to keep track of transactions. Budget Monitor helps you stick to your carefully planned budget, while the Bills section reminds you of amounts due to be paid. You even have report capability on your iPhone, so you can get a good idea of what you spent yesterday, last month, or last year. All of this, of course, is combined with a classy design and completely free.
To run Money on your iPhone, you need the brand new iPhone OS 3.0, which can be downloaded from Apple’s Web site as a free software update. Naturally, you are able to synchronize Money on your iPhone with the desktop version on your Mac. To maximize security, Money for iPhone also features the ability to set a pass code, just in case you don’t want to boast about your spending habits to anyone who gets ahold of your iPhone.
Being all hot and agitated, you should rush into iTunes App Store and get the free copy of Money for iPhone immediately! It’s not that they can run out of stock or anything, but still... Do it.

Looks really good, but will not work on my 1st Gen ipod Touch. Says I need a microphone.
I got the same as Colin. I am quite disappointed. I can’t even think of why it would need a microphone anyways, and surely such a thing could probably be made optional.
Don’t panic guys. Right now I also have no idea why it is asking for the microphone. If you both are on iPhone OS 3.0 and it is possible to fix this, there will be an updated version asap.
Downloaded the app on a whim and I like it! I spent all morning getting Money (desktop version) set with transaction history from Quicken, re-categorized everything, and then synced. Sadly, the Payees list on the iPhone version doesn’t recognize Payees who are only companies. It seems to be relying upon the First Name/Last Name setup, and lists all companies as “no first name” (or something like that).
That’s literally the only problem I’ve been able to see, and IMO it’s a big problem since most of the places I spend my money are companies and not individuals.
Also, might I suggest adding the ability to activate the iPhone-to-Desktop sync from the iPhone itself?
Right now I have to open both apps and sync them on my desktop. However, I have a mac mini that I keep running all day long. When I come home, I’d like to be able to sync the day’s transactions via just the iPhone.
Money for iPhone is not working with multi-currency accounts? All my accounts in Money for iPhone are in the same currency, though in desktop client they are different =(
And please add ability to hide accounts (I dont’ use all of them frequently).
And usability needs to be polished.
Waiting for the very next version!
Now I’m choosing between iBank and Money.
Yes I am disappointed too after all this wait. No 1st gen touch but if you could fix that. I guess the waiting will just start again. Maybe this time around it won’t take so long. All over sudden your 1 year old ipod feels so old. But I am not getting a new one just now. So please let us in. BTW the iphone version looks really sweet.
Michael
Thanks for your feedbacks.
Payee/company problem will be fixed in the next version. Hopefully problem with the 1st gen iPod Touch also (if we find a solution for that).
What about multi-currencies support – it requires more work and will not be in the nearest update.
Other suggestions added to the users wish list for the future versions.
Hello
Thanks for encouraging words. I would love to have the app on my 1st gen touch. I was so frustrated that I tried resync my touch because I couldn’t believe it. So pleeeeeease let us in.
Michael
Problem with 1st generation iPod Touch/iPhone compatibility is fixed. So, if you have OS 3.0 installed you can download Jumsoft Money now. Let me know if you are still having problems.

Here is where the amazing stuff happens two days after the first release they are able to fix the problem with the 1st gen ipod touch. Great. I am so happy.
Love your products, after a few hiccups with the iphone-mac sync, everything is going great now. A suggestion to go along with other people’s ideas. I Use the “comments” column in the mac version all the time. Fo instance I may choose category ( groceries) and in the comments column i type the name of the store I bought it from, and any other important info. For me it’s a really great way to further sort out the transactions. It would be great if there were an entry point for comments on the iphone version. I can’t imagine it would be hard to do. Again love your products. Use money multiple times a day, everyday!
Michael, I am glad that it works now.
Brian, thanks for your feedback. Comments field will be added in the one of the nearest updates (very likely in the nearest one that will be submitted to Apple next week).
I sync with the iPhone and all the transaction that were splitted on the desktop are now duplicated..!
The amount shown in the transaction report are correct but the report are now uncorrect with all the amount oddly doubled…
Re to Mauro: Similar thing happened to me after I upgraded to Snow Leopard-after syncing with iphone, now a bunch of random transactions are split. I’ve never used the split feature before. I tried reinstalling money app on my iphone, reseting library, upgrading Money desktop, still splits some transactions. Cant really use the iphone app now until this is fixed. good thing I backed up my library on desktop.
Thanks Tommy! Yes, I confirm that the split problem happened after upgrading to Snow Leopard…now I hope that Jumsoft will give us a solution since I used the split transaction regularly and cleaning the database from the duplicate ones takes ages!
Mauro and Tommy,
Sorry for the inconveniences. We are trying to locate the problem.
Firstly, if something unexpected during sync happens, you can always restore desktop and/or iPhone versions data to the state before sync using “Restore” button.
If I understand correctly – you two synced Money and iPhone versions before upgrade, then everything went well, but the problem appeared right after first sync after upgrade to Snow Leopard. Is it right?
Also, any more info that could help locate the problem – were you making changes on desktop version or on both before the problems appeared?
Dear Martynas,
thanks for the reply.
Yes, you understand correctly:
- sync with iphone before Snow Leopard seems OK, although in Leopard I used only to insert transaction in the desktop version;
- I upgraded to Snow Leopard and started to use more intensively the iPhone app adding transaction and modifying splits and later sync with desktop. At this stage the problem happened.
Luckily I’ve a backup copy and I’m going to restore my application this afternoon.
Thanks Martynas, I can confirm I did not notice the problem until after the SN upgrade and that is only happened after syncing with iPhone. Also, when reviewing the transactions which had a split after syncing, they go back to before I used the iPhone app so I think they were from transactions entered on desktop version.
I have more than 700 transactions, 200 Payees and 100 Categories and Money for iPhone is really slow at this point. Besides this, everything is perfect
Hope that the next update will fix the performance problem because sometimes, when I click in a textfield, I must wait between 1 and 2 seconds before the keyboard appears.
Kensou,
Thanks for your feedback.
An update with Bills fixes, interface improvements and powerpc sync fix is already submitted to Apple about a week ago.
We will try to improve speed in the next update.
I can’t get my laptop to send the data to the iphone. It says its syncing and everything seems to work but then the iphone app quits and when i reopen it there is nothing in the accounts etc. On the flip side the info is syncing to the laptop from the iphone. I created a new account and it sent it to my laptop but the rest of the accounts didn’t show up on the iPhone. When I deleted the new account from the iphone it didn’t delete from the laptop.
Running Leopard and an iPhone 3GS, both have most recent versions of money.
Any thoughts?
Melissa,
We are currently working on this issue. This “crash” when syncing seems to be happening with some larger databases. An iPhone version’s update will be submitted to Apple soon.
Great. Thanks for the quick response. I can wait for the update. I am very pleased with the iPhone app availability…when it works with my database my life will be so much more organized!
I am wondering if the iphone app, as well as the Mac software allows Unicodes input? For the iPhone, can eMoji be used as well?
IPhone version uses custom keyboard, so not all symbols can be entered using it. (eMoji also cannot be used in this keyboard). We will try to improve this in the future versions.
But desktop version allows Unicodes input.
Nice looking app. just doesn’t work. Won’t sync with iphone. I have new versions of both…
I have the issue of transactions doubling up and i am not on snow leopard, running most recent versions of both iphone and desktop apps…
Larry, if you are having problems with an iPhone version crash during the sync – an update last week with a fix was submitted to Apple.
Simon, please check email. I need more info to locate the problem.
Dear all,
still a month after notifying that transaction are duplicated when I sinc with the iphone and no solution?
I tried also the updated release for the iphone but the problem is still there…
Hello Mauro,
Please check your email – we will try to find a solution.
Hello,
I bought your Money software and I like it but one thing gives me a problem.
I living in the Province of Quebec,Canada.
We are speaking. So Money is alredy in French. Thank you very much.
In this province, the taxes are calculated like this:
exemple:
Price: 100$
Taxe 1 5$ (5%)
sub-total 105$
taxe 2 7,875$ (7,5% of the price and the first tax)
total 112,86$
The law didn’t give us the choice for billing. The second tax is charged on the price and the first tax.
We can calculate 2 taxes with Money but the second tax cannot actually include the first tax.
Is it possible to give your application the possible to cover this feature?
Your software seems to be incredible with this iphone sync.
If you can adapt Money to our needs, it will be a pleasure for me to refer it as the best software to use for managing their money .
Thank you for your creativity.
Patrick, thanks for your feedback. Currently such option is not possible. Added to the users wish list.
I’ve been using the iPhone and desktop app together for quite a while and I have a few suggestions, if I may:
- Activate Sync via iPhone: I’ve mentioned it before but it’s worth saying again.
- Manage Inventory on iPhone: The desktop app has an inventory function and it goes untouched. If the iPhone app could manage household inventory (capture SKUs, take pictures, etc) this feature would become more useful.
- More Payee Types: Right now we can list a payee as a person or company, but these aren’t applicable to things like ATMs or money transfers. Offering other types of payees would help sorting and sanity.
- Payee Pictures: The desktop app has a lot of coverflow functions, but without payee pictures it’s sort of useless. Allow us to add in logos/photos for payees to help with the sorting.
- Search for Duplicate Transactions: Right now the only way I can find duplicate transactions is manually. If we could have a “find duplicates” function in the desktop app, it would help keep the registry clean.
- Hide accounts on iPhone: Currently the iPhone app shows all of my desktop accounts. I would love to be able to hide some of them from the iPhone version, since nearly all of my transactions are from checking and I don’t care about other accounts. This would just be a clutter-reducer.
That’s about it. Thanks, guys!
Thank you, Ryan, for your suggestions. Added to the users wish list.
Hi,
just got the new iPhone update for money, hoped to see it all up and running like in the first version. Though the reports still don’t work properly, at least not the pie and bar diagrams. The same pie report as i had working before now just says 100% nothing.
Regards
Niklas
Hello Niklas,
This seems to be happening if “All” accounts are chosen in the report settings. The little workaround is to choose only “some” – multiple accounts. This should show correct data for the chosen accounts.
Sorry for the inconveniences, this will be fixed asap.
When do you think multi-currency account will be supported on the iphone?
Money for iPhone 2.0 with multi-currencies support will be released with Money 4.0 that we are working on already. Cannot tell exact date right now, but it will be later this year.
Why do you restrict the exchange rates in Money to only 4 decimal places? I make a lot of transfers from US dollar to UK pound and my bank uses 6 decimal points for international transfers. The problem is I when I enter the transfer in US Dollars on the dollar account the pound account shows an account that is only an approximation of the real amount I received from the bank. After a few transfers there is an accumulated error of quite a few pounds. Is there a way to go around this problem?
I’m having an issue with a huge number of my transaction’s category name changing to spilts after the last updates. this happened one other time and it took me a long time to fix going back through each one… I really don’t want to do that again. Is there any light you can shed on this issue…
.. a loyal, but frustrated, money user
Antonio,
Money downloads currency rates from the finance.yahoo.com page and 4 decimal points are used there. Unfortunately I cannot suggest any workaround for the current version. Added to the users wish list.
Brian,
Can you give a bit more info – did the problem happen right after upgrade or during the first sync after upgrade?
If something unexpected happens during the sync, you can always restore iPhone and/or desktop versions data to the state that was right before the sync using the Restore button (next to the Sync button) in your device’s view in the main Money window .
I think it did happen right after my last sync, now that I think about it. Yes.. I’m pretty sure that’s when it happened. I will try to restore later today, I also have time machine backups I can access. But what will happen the next time I go to sync my ipod touch?
In case some information about that bad sync is being saved in the Sync Services framework, I can suggest performing “fresh sync” – deleting that sync history and re-syncing freshly with an iPhone version. Please check your email for detailed instructions.
Hi all,
Any sign of Money 4 and revamp of the Iphone product?
Regards,
Gary
Hi All,
I have tried many apps for iPhone and Mac and Money is the best by far, simple and to strait the point. (and Syncs, which is a must)
But I think your interface for iPhone is getting a little behind the competition on both visuals (Retina display) and Usability, I would rather enter the transaction then say which account the money is coming/ going to than the other way around.
Hope to her from you guys.
Cheers,
Diego
Gary, Diego,
Thanks for your interest. We are currently actively working on new Mac and iPhone versions. Mac version is in the closed Beta stage. Still some issues needs to be fixed/improved.
Both versions should be finally released in 1-2 months.
What a great article, I love the way you create content. I have just tweeted this for you to share it and enjoy other publicity to your page!
